Originally established to support local markets and small producers, the organisation saw an opportunity to develop a premium caramel sauce that showcased the best local ingredients.
What started as a small-batch product quickly gained recognition, winning prestigious awards and becoming a favourite among caramel lovers. Today, Devils Churn continues to grow, proving that great ideas, local talent, and entrepreneurial spirit can create something truly special.

The Story Behind the Name
The name Devils Churn comes from a natural sea cave located at Pans Rock near Ballycastle, Northern Ireland. Known locally as The Devils Churn, this dramatic coastal feature was once a key part of the 18th and 19th-century salt works. The cave consists of an inner pool, separated from the open sea at low tide by a rock lip, with a rock shelf pierced by a sinkhole leading to an underwater chamber below.
To support salt production, a barrier was installed seaward of the sinkhole to control water flow during storms—remnants of this structure can still be seen today. At high tide, seawater spills into the inner cave, creating a powerful swirling effect, once used to settle impurities in the salt extraction process.
Today, The Devils Churn remains a striking landmark, accessible via steps hand carved and shaped by both the sea and people. As the tide rises and falls, the sea surges through the cave with thunderous force, echoing through the tunnels—a spectacle that reflects the rich, flowing indulgence of our caramel sauces.
The name also captures the essence of our product: “Devil” nods to its irresistible indulgence, while “Churn” honours the local dairy used in our recipes. Our caramel may have a devilish name, but its heavenly taste is matched only by the good it does in the community.
